Registering for the exam
You take the exam at a Dutch embassy or consulate.
Where can you take the exam?
You take the exam in your country of origin or where you hold a residence permit. You take the exam at a Dutch embassy or consulate.
If there is no Dutch embassy or consulate in your country, then choose the embassy or consulate closest to you. You may require a visa in that case. Please contact the embassy or consulate where you would like to take your exam for this purpose.
This is how taking the BIB exam works
- You register for the exam.You can do so via this website, digitally, or using a paper form.
- You pay for the exam.A complete exam costs €150.
- You will receive confirmation.Within 5 working days.
- You make an appointment with the embassy or consulate yourself.The confirmation letter explains how to do this.
- You take the exam at the embassy or consulate.You take the exam in your country of origin or in a nearby country.
- You will receive the resultsWithin 8 weeks.

Registering with a paper form
If you register with a paper form, you will have to wait longer to take the exam. Processing the form may take up to 10 weeks.

Payment
There are various ways to pay for the exam.
If you register for the exam online:
- If you have a Dutch bank account number, you can pay using iDeal.
- You can also pay via bank transfer. We will then send you a payment request by email.
If you register for the exam using a paper form:
- You will receive a payment request by post.
Make an appointment
Have you paid? Then you will receive confirmation by email within 5 working days, or later by post. Your confirmation letter will also include your candidate number.
You then make an appointment with the embassy or consulate yourself. The email or letter explains how.
Change exam date
Have you already made an appointment for the exam? And would you like to reschedule? Then please contact the embassy or the consulate to ask if that is possible. You can only change the date of your exam once. You can do so up to 24 hours before the exam.
Would you prefer to take your exam somewhere else? Please contact the embassy or consulate where you wish to take your exam, to ask if that is possible. If it is, then please reply to the confirmation email or the confirmation of your payment. You can only change the location of your exam once. You can do so up to 24 hours before the exam.
Cancelling your exam
If have changed your mind about taking the exam, then please reply to the confirmation email or the confirmation of your payment and state your name and candidate number. Explain that you wish to cancel your registration for the exam. You can find your candidate number in the confirmation of your registration.
Please cancel your exam at least 24 hours in advance. You will then be able to get your money back. Respond to the confirmation letter or the payment confirmation notification to ask your money back. We will transfer the money back within 6 weeks. It will be paid into the account number from which we received the payment.
