Basic civic integration examination abroad
You want to come to the Netherlands to move in with your partner. Or to work here as a spiritual counsellor. If you require a provisional residence permit (MVV) for this purpose, then you will need to pass an exam first. This exam is called the Basic Civic Integration Examination (BIB). If you want to bring your partner to the Netherlands, then your partner will need to pass the BIB.
For whom is this relevant?
Go to ind.nl to see if your require a provisional residence permit (MVV). If you require an MVV, then you will need to pass the BIB. You will only be able to apply for an MVV from the IND afterwards.
If your partner needs an MVV, then you will need to wait until your partner passes the BIB. You will be able to apply for an MVV from the IND for your partner afterwards.
For whom is this irrelevant?
In some situations you do not need to take the BIB, even if you do need an MVV. We call this an exemption.
Are you unable to take the BIB? For example due to an illness or disability? Then you may not need to take the BIB either, even though you require an MVV. We call this a dispensation.

What you need to do
- You study for the exam.Use the self-study package to do so.
- You take the practice exams.Reading, Speaking and Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNS).
- You register for the exam.A complete exam costs €150.
- You take the exam at an embassy or consulate.You will receive the results within 8 weeks.
- Did you pass? Then you apply for an MVV and come to the Netherlands.In most cases, your sponsor will apply for your MVV from the IND.
